Elizabetes street

At all times famous and respected persons have lived in this area: Mārtiņš Ņukša – architect and diplomat, Kārlis Kasparsons – the first Minister of Education, Kārlis Padegs – the most extravagant painter of Riga Alberts Kviesis – the third President of Latvia, Vilis Lācis – the writer, L. Sēja – the envoy in Vatican and many other cultural and political figures. The following is located here: Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Consular Departments of Embassies of Ukraine and Czech Republic, Jewish Agency “Sohnut”, Institute of International Relations of Latvia, central offices of banks and other significant institutions.

Like in Broadway, New York City, at the beginning of the 20th century residents of Riga used to choose the section of Elizabetes Street from Krišjāņa Valdemāra Street to Tērbatas Street for strolls and meeting with friends. Elizabetes Street was called the “leggy beauty”, as it was the longest street with so many art nouveau monuments. Many of them were built according to the projects of the engineer Michael Eisenstein and differ by their peculiar and luxurious decor.
